I haven’t read any books yet. Question: How do they write so many space marine centric novels, without also developing their “villains”, in the same novels? Aren’t they always fighting someone in those novels?

As an outsider who recently got into 40k, I hate to say it, but Space Marines are the big draw. They're like the Jedi and Sith of the Warhammer universe. Nothing else could pull me into the universe except the various types of Space Marines. I played Darktide and I loved it. My friends and I still play it regularly, but we enjoy it as a stand alone thing. Darktide doesn't fill me with a desire to play more warhammer games. But give me a game like Chaos Gate: Demon hunters and I'm in. Why? Because it features Space Marines. If I'm being honest. Complaining about it is kind of silly. Dude complains that less people are playing Warhammer and then complains about its biggest money maker. If you want to grow your audience, this is it. Once you draw people in then you can try and sell people on the other factions and races. In my opinion, there is no Space Marine problem. There's an aging fanbase that isn't ready to go mainstream problem.

I used to play dark angels, but since the beginning I've wanted to play Elder and Tau, but the quality of rules and models could never justify the expense. Despite that both have some of my favorite lore.

I love space marines they are very cool and I hate elf’s. But they need more books more models and more wins. It’s grim dark if you 100% need to put a space marines in you books show them getting clapped.

Im really not all that into the grim dark as excuse for everything, only bad desicions get made to keep the story running, Thats a snooze fest. I need a book with a spacemarine that has an existential crisis and deserts to become a carpenter, a Tyranid that escaped the hive mind and becomes a really picky eater until it meets a gourmet chef and learns how to cook and becomes even pickier, and an Eldari teenager who spreads "Slaneesh sucks" stickers all over the galaxy. Idk I hope they do something thats not super predictable. 😂

I play space marines (ravenguard) and necrons. Building intercessors has been my most fond experience when it comes to building warhammer each model has so many options and ooze with storytelling opportunities and character. Necrons.... just look boring. They all have to face the same way, hold the gun the same way. I know they should be very uniform and unread legion blah blah blah. But can't some be dragging their gun? Or holding it with one hand and doing something else with the other? Even pointing somewhere? Wargames exclusive make way better necrons and xenos models than GW and that's sad. GW forces xenos players to go elsewhere

I love Tacticus. I play it every day….lots of stuff to do. The only real problem is how challenging it is to catch up…but they have it structured where even new players can engage with higher leveled players and not be totaled overran (Guild War, TA level limiting, etc.).

I quit for the same reason, granted that was prolly back in 5th. I entered into an escalation league and 29 of the 30 players were marines. My army at the time (sisters) that I had been playing since 2nd edition didn’t even have a codex, just a Matt Ward chapter approved. I will say tho, it was pretty easy to counter play. 81 meltas vs marines. Free wins tyvm

I know you're being hyperbolic Wes, but Space Marines were definitely not the strongest faction on 10th Edition launch. Eldar were nuts, Orks were good, Tau, CSM, and Votann were all winning more than 50% of their games. I completely agree though that more factions need more lore (Votann, please for the love of God get a book), and other factions NEED more and updated models. I am praying for a massive Eldar refresh when they get their codex.

Like many others have said, I'd love to see more fluff on the other factions. That said, if GW does want to keep pumping out Space Marine stuff, they should be varying it. Give us more stuff about successor chapters. I'm a massive Raptors fanboy. They're quite different to most chapters out there. Or give us Marines out of context. Something like a marine who is cut off from his chapter and has to get along with the regular humans around him in order to survive. You could apply this to different situations. A marine and an Arbite investigating a crime, a marine keeping some survivors alive on a hostile planet, a marine who has to go on a quest to get/fix/destroy/activate/deactivate/etc something without using violence. I want to see a marine grow as a character, use their brain, and solve problems. If they insist on making it all about marines, then give them a personality beyond that of a psychopathic killer.

Bro described my journey in 40k I went all in on the guard and sort of went with everything else slowly

My first exposure to this universe way way back in the 80s was through- space marines, surprise surprise. But as I delved in to the lore and the tabletop, another hero emerged to me- the Imperial Guard. Regular dudes like you and me, holding the line for the rest of humanity against the most terrible horrors imaginable. That's ripe ground for good storytelling, and it's been done quite well (lookin at you, Gaunt's Ghosts... please finish the sabbat crusade books!) but it hasn't been done enough. Every now and again we get an omnibus of short stories from various regiments, and at some point a few standout regiments got their own rules and models, but for the most part it's still overwhelmingly Cadian Shocktroopers... and friends. And even they pale in comparison to any chapter of marines, even the ones nobody buys (I'm a raven guard fanboi, so I know that pain... I commiserate with my brothers the salamanders.). Recent games such as "Darktide" finally gave us the chance to play 40k- without the space marines at the front and center, and I leapt at that chance even though I prefer RTS to FPS by FAR. I remember reading that Cavill said he wanted his show to feature such super powerful entities like Custodes or Astartes as background figures because focusing on them was narratively limiting... And I hope he sticks to that. I wouldn't mind seeing his take on what they should look like in real life, but the focus of the show needs to be on an actual human, IMO, to keep it relatable. A rogue Trader, a Commissar, a Tech Priest, a Guard commander, It's not like there is a shortage of roles that could serve as the anchor point to this show, or even the next game or book- GW just needs to be shown the only thing they want to see- that there is a legitimate market for things outside the "Spaceee mahreens!"

whoah! Wes, what you are not explaining correctly, or simply donot understand, about the stated profits for Alphabet is the financial shenenigans they do. Shuffling money around on paper, from one shell company to the next, to the next, ad-nauseum, to hide their actual profits and manipulate their tax burdon down to almost zero. Mega corporations in the USA are massively profitable, in every way, except when it comes time to write the profits down on their tax statements. If you wanna talk about a vicious cycle, look into bribing politicians to reduce your tax burdon, so that you have more money to bribe even more politicians, until you eventually own every aspect of your now captive government.

One of my favourite depictions of Lucius is in the audio drama The Embrace of Pain by Ian St Martin, narrated by John Banks and Antonia Beamish. The mix of the writing and extremely good and atmospheric voice acting is top tier. Highly recommend it

Its almost like space marines are the franchise's poster child, and a huge reason for why people are even drawn to the verse in the first place. Hate to break it to yall, but every xeno faction in the game exists for space marines to flex on. Hell even most human faction exist for no reason other than to make marines look good. This isnt new. It's been this way for decades. For better or worse, msrines sell, its not going to change anytime soon.

Let's just not give the Tau, the epitome of un-40k, any attention. They should remain irrelevant or be retconned out of existence entirely. Seriously, what was GW thinking? Injecting self-righteous space hippies into a grimdark universe? They clash so hard with the aesthetic, they might as well be in a different game.

Modern 40K marine stories are some of the most boring writing in 40k (unless it's hardcore grimdark about baseline humans, eg, militarum, inquisition, mechanicus). Most modern 40k writing is repetitive bolter porn for Ultramarines fans (the most boring, normie chapter of Astartes) or Space Wolves focused (only slightly less predictable). It seems to be written mostly to hype sales for tabletop. By contrast, The Heresy era writing comes off as more talented , with creative lore elements (especially about Chaos), flawed primarchs, a complicated and interesting human cast, a mysterious Emperor, better plotlines all around. Even the marines in Heresy era setting are more interesting and compelling.

As a new collector of Space Marines, my biggest issue isn't the 11 different poses of lieutenants. The problem is the vast product line you need to collect to have a complete army.

It would be cool for the show if they followed a guardsman fighting a some sort of Xenos force and then part way through they discover like a tyranid hive or tyranids attack. Then mid season space marines came in to duke it out with the nids. That way you could introduce 4 factions in season 1.

I am a newby (I bought the starter set tyranids vs space marines you showed in the video) and haven't even played my first match. But since I am a "gearhead" kind of person, i got a resin printer and went for looking for Warhammer 40k stl. I found so many space marine models, it's absurd. Even though i want to play the orks, since i fell in love with them during the soulsstorm video game, but i have hardly found stls for them. So yeah, i can proof your point, they are overrepresented.

Ill make GW a deal, they can have 1 more primarch come back but i get another wave of kroot releases WITH knarlocs.
